Institute of Japanese Studies, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, founded in 1981, is a comprehensive academic research organization with 60 fixed number of members. At present it has 46 members including 33 research fellows and 8 research assistants. Among them there are 9 research professors and 12 associate research professors. 18 research fellows have Ph.D degree and 9 have M.A degree.

The institute sticks to the principle of laying equal stress on basic theory and policy studies. It is mainly engaged in the researches of Japanese politics, economy, society & culture and foreign relations. It is also engaged in educating graduate students.

The main tasks of the institute are carrying out research projects from the government, the academy and the institute itself. Besides these, it also practices open-door policy by accepting research projects from the organizations at home and abroad and carrying out activities such as mutual visits among researchers, conducting cooperative researches, implementing investigations and taking refresher courses, exchanging materials, organizing international symposiums of various levels independently as well as cooperatively.

The internal structures and functions of the institute are as follows:

Academic Committee: analyzing present academic situation, foreseeing it's developing trend, considering academic research plans and choosing excellent academic results etc.

Department of Japanese Politics: carrying out researches on Japanese political system, party and situation and defense policy, administration and legal system etc.

Department of Japanese Economy: carrying out researches on Japanese economic system and policy, finance and trade, industrial structure and economic development etc.

Department of Japanese Foreign Relations: carrying out researches on Japanese foreign policy, security strategy and regional cooperation policy etc.

Department of Japanese Society & Culture: carrying out researches on Japanese macro culture, social structure, trend of thought and reform etc.

Department of Book and Material: placing orders, managing, storing up and exchanging books and materials of Chinese and foreign languages and constructing data base etc.

Editorial Department: editing, printing and publishing bimonthly Japanese Studies etc.

Administration Office: supervising the institute's academic research, foreign affairs, administrative management, and the works regarding education of graduate students etc.

Besides these, the institute has the following research centers: Center for Sino-Japanese Relations Studies, Center for Sino-Japanese Economy Studies, Center for Japanese Politics Studies, Center for Sino-Japanese Social & Culture Studies and Center for East-Asian Peace and Development Strategy Studies. The institute also acts as managing organization of Chinese Leaned Society of Japanese Studies and National Leaned Society of Japanese Economy on behalf of them.
